Class Descriptions

Snowplow Sam

The Snowplow Sam levels are designed to help the preschool-age skater develop preliminary coordination and strength necessary to maneuver on the ice. This class is designed for skaters of age 6 and younger who have no prior skating experience. Skaters can join at the early age of 3, however they must be excited to skate and be comfortable to be independent in a class for 30 minutes. Sam classes take place at 5:30pm on Tuesdays and 9:15am on Saturdays.

For information about the Snowplow Sam curriculum, click HERE.

Basic Skills

The “Basic Skills” are the fundamentals of the sport. These six levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges,  crossovers, three turns and Mohawks. Upon completion of the Basic 1-6 levels, skaters will have the basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to the more  specialized areas of skating. These classes are for skaters ages 7 - 14. If your child has not taken classes at Kent before, they will be placed in Basic 1 and will be evaluated on the first day. Basic Skills Levels 1-3 are at 5:30pm on Tuesdays and 9:15am on Saturdays. Basic Skills Levels 4-6 are at 6:30pm on Tuesdays and 10:15am on Saturdays.

For more information about the Basic Skills curriculum, click HERE.

If you have passed through Basic 6 and are looking for advanced figure skating classes, please see the Kent Valley Academy section below.

Adult Skills

The Adult curriculum is designed for the beginner adult skater. It will promote physical fitness as well as improve balance and coordination while learning proper skating techniques. Divided into six levels, adult skaters will progress at an individual rate while being challenged and motivated. This is a new exciting program for people who look to skating as an enjoyable way for a fit and healthy lifestyle. Adult Skills Classes begin at 6:30pm on Tuesdays and 10:15am on Saturdays.

Adult Elite

The Adult Elite class is for skaters who have passed Adult 1-6 and are looking to further their figure skating skills. The Adult Elite class begins at 6:30pm on Tuesdays. Skaters who are registered for this class are allowed to skate the free skate after their lesson at 7:00pm.

Kent Valley Academy

Kent Valley Academy is a transition from the Basic Skills to the freeskate levels starting at Pre-skate to Freeskate 6. Skaters will be learning more challenging jumps, spins, choreography, and edge skills. This is preparing skaters for the next step in U.S. Figure Skating. Academy classes take place at 6:30pm on Tuesdays and 10:15am on Saturdays.

Stay Healthy

Skating is more than just a fun pastime; it's also a great way to get in shape.  Ice skating builds endurance, strengthens muscles, and increases flexibility while burning around 250 to 810 calories an hour during a recreational session and 450 to 1080 calories an hour during a competitive session.

Preparing for Your Lesson

We recommend you dress in warm, comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely.  Dress in layers, so as you warm up, you can remove your top layers and still stay comfortable.  Helmets are highly recommended for children 6 and under as well as first-time adults.  Be sure to arrive early to each class to give yourself plenty of time to get your skates on and meet your teacher a few minutes before the class starts.
